Ever wonder why you can somehow unwittingly store the lyrics to most songs from your teenage years yet can’t remember what you had for lunch? Just me? Well, Remember should help illuminate the how and why our brains do what they do as well as the absolute fragility of our memory.
Our brains use ‘creative editing’ and in fact remembering an event is really reimagining it and we often pepper those imaginings with new or erroneous information. Fragments are captured and recorded but we fill in the blanks. And there are a lot of blanks as forgetfulness is our “default setting”. Not helpful when you are at the supermarket with your grocery list left behind but crucial for trauma.
Genova weaves studies and practical suggestions on living a life maximizing your brain’s power to preserve memories and also tips on how to release more unwelcome ones. Check out the book Remember! It is a book you are sure not to forget (unless you want to!).
